If you run a DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing operation, ink quality isn't just a spec sheet number — it's the difference between a print that survives 50 washes and one that cracks after five. Here's how to actually tell if your ink is holding up.
1. Check for Consistent Color Output
Good ink prints the same color today as it did last week. If your CMYK values are drifting between batches, that's a red flag on formulation consistency.
2. Watch for Clogging
Low-quality ink separates or thickens in the lines, leading to clogged nozzles and streaky prints. If you're cleaning print heads more than usual, look at the ink first.
3. Test Wash Durability
Print a swatch, cure it properly, then run it through 10-20 wash cycles. Quality DTF ink holds color and doesn't crack or peel prematurely.
4. Smell Test (Low Odor Matters)
Cheaper ink formulas often carry a strong chemical smell that lingers in production spaces. A well-formulated, low-odor ink is easier (and safer) to run all day.
5. Check Viscosity Stability
Ink viscosity should stay stable across temperature changes in your shop. If print quality changes with the weather, viscosity control is the likely culprit.
6. Look at White Ink Opacity
White ink is the hardest to get right. Good white ink lays down opaque, even coverage without needing multiple passes.
7. Assess Color Vibrancy After Curing
Some inks look great wet but dull out after curing. Always judge ink quality on the final cured print, not the fresh one.
8. Monitor Print Head Wear
Poor ink formulations can accelerate wear on expensive print heads. If you're replacing heads more often than your printer's rated lifespan, ink quality may be a factor.
9. Batch-to-Batch Reliability
Order a new batch and compare it side-by-side with your last one. Reliable suppliers keep formulas consistent order after order.
10. Real Production Testing, Not Just Specs
Spec sheets only tell part of the story. The real test is running the ink in daily production for a few weeks and tracking defect rates, reprints, and downtime.
